Introducing our Newest Community Expert, Lucinda Powell

Lucinda Powell wears many hats and is a Podcaster, Trainer, Speaker, Educator and Mother of 3 boys.

She supports teachers to use evidenced based psychology in all aspects of their classroom practice. She has a BSc in Philosophy and Psychology, an MA in Special and Inclusive education. Lucinda is also a qualified teacher and taught psychology from 2002-2017.

Since September 2017, she has been working as an Education Consultant specialising in mental health and wellbeing.

If all the above is not keeping her busy, she presents at conferences and runs staff training programmes in schools. She has also worked closely with the AnDY Clinic at Reading University, as a coach on the School Mental Health Award at the Carnegie School of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools and leads the Oxfordshire Schools mental health and wellbeing network and is course author and associate lecturer for ITT at Coventry University.

As a mother of 3 boys, the eldest (16) of whom has ADHD & ASC and youngest (12) of whom is severely dyslexic, she has plenty of personal experience of supporting young people through their school career.
One of her greatest passions is to train educators to apply psychology successfully in the classroom. Lucinda comments on this as follows:

“Psychological and educational research takes time to trickle from the academic journals into classroom practice.  I aim to bridge the gap by discussing how current research can be applied to teaching practice, speaking with those who are doing the research and digging deeper into the reliability of the latest fads and fashions in the educational world. This will enable educators to constantly evaluate their classroom practice, ensure their teaching is evidence based and help them improve outcomes for all their students.”

And her twin passion is the topic of Wellbeing in Education. She has written many blogs on this topic and has plans to explore this further in a future podcast series. She talks about educators wearing the proverbial oxygen mask before putting it on for the children and following 5 steps for wellbeing: connecting; being active; learning; giving and being present.
We are delighted to welcome Lucinda to the Opogo Community Expert team and look forward to the thought leadership around both Wellbeing in education and the successful application of psychology to the classroom.
