In this short course, we’ll explore what is meant by ‘Emotional Regulation’ and how you can apply this in the classroom.

As an educator, supporting students emotions is a fundamental task so that they can access learning. Going right back to the work of John Dewey, learning environments that create a psychologically and physically safe, are pivotal for social, emotional and academic progress. If we can support students in managing their own emotions, we give them the tools to own their own feelings.

Emotional regulation refers to the ability to manage and control one’s emotions effectively, and educators can employ various strategies to support students in developing these skills.

Firstly, educators can create a safe and supportive classroom environment where students feel comfortable expressing their emotions without fear of judgment. By validating students’ feelings and providing them with a platform to discuss their emotions openly, educators can help students develop self-awareness and recognise their emotional triggers.

Additionally, teaching students specific techniques for regulating their emotions can empower them to manage their feelings constructively. Some of the techniques we will share in this lesson will include ‘Mood Maps’ which can give students a language to share their emotions effectively.

Moreover, educators can model effective emotional regulation themselves, demonstrating how to cope with stress, frustration, or disappointment in healthy ways. By displaying resilience and problem-solving skills, educators can inspire students to adopt similar strategies when faced with adversity. We have included a number of tips and materials to support educators with this.

.By promoting emotional regulation skills in the classroom, educators can contribute to a positive learning environment where students feel empowered to manage their emotions effectively. As students become more adept at regulating their emotions, they are likely to experience improved mood, greater self-confidence, and enhanced academic performance. Ultimately, these skills lay the foundation for lifelong emotional well-being and success.
