Effective Lesson Planning

This course, designed for teachers, HLTAs and educators with lesson planning responsibility. It provides guidance and resources for effective lesson planning. The course consists of a lesson focussed on the principals of lesson planning and one which explains the Opogo lesson plan. Both will give you a starting knowledge in order to plan your lessons effectively.

You will find the Opogo Lesson Plan template in the materials section of this course. It is a simple but effective form which you can utilise in the absence of school template. We will walk you through this template in lesson two of this course.

Our main lesson includes the following topics:

1. Introduction to Lesson Planning: This module covers the fundamentals of lesson planning, including the importance of structured lessons and how to create a flexible plan that can adapt to classroom dynamics.
2. Setting Learning Objectives: Teachers will learn how to define clear, achievable learning objectives that align with curriculum standards and student needs. This module emphasizes the importance of SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals.
3. Designing Engaging Activities: This section focuses on creating interactive and engaging activities that cater to different learning styles. Teachers will explore various techniques to make lessons more dynamic and interesting, ensuring student engagement and participation.
4. Assessment and Feedback: Effective assessment strategies are crucial for measuring student progress. This module provides tools and methods for both formative and summative assessments, along with techniques for providing constructive feedback that supports student growth.
5. Classroom Management: Managing a classroom effectively is key to a successful learning environment. This module offers strategies for maintaining discipline, fostering a positive classroom atmosphere, and handling challenging behaviours.
6. Reflective Practice: The final module encourages teachers to reflect on their teaching practices, assess their effectiveness, and make necessary adjustments. This continuous improvement approach helps teachers stay responsive to their students’ needs and enhance their teaching skills over time.

Your presenter

Phil Denton is our Director of Learn. He has experience as a teacher of History for over 10 years. In addition, Phil worked as a senior leader across schools in the UK and abroad for many years. During his career he has support teachers and leaders to improve their practice. He has a MA in Education alongside his teaching and leadership qualifications. Phil attempts to simplify lesson planning and he stresses the importance of positive relationships that underpin learning environments.

By the end of the course, teachers will have a robust toolkit for planning and delivering effective lessons, ensuring a productive and engaging learning experience for their students.
