Autism masking is common place amongst children and young people of all ages. It can often be the case the autism goes undiagnosed for years. The consequence of the masking that is often involved is heightened anxiety in the home and in an individuals experience of school. This course contains a video below and one lesson which is taken from our webinar on this subject.

Our presenter is Nicola Musgrove, an experienced practitioner of children with SEND and also a parent of two children with autism. Nicola is a passionate advocate of children with SEND and has spent a great deal of time studying towards effective teaching and learning in this area.

To that end, Nicola has a unique insight into the masking children with autism may display and the anxiety that this can cause. It can be difficult to spot which makes having an understanding of this area crucial to work effectively with students with autism.

In the supporting materials, there is a research document from Research Gate and a quick guide from the NHS. The NHS document will give you the confidence to articulate your understanding of the topic and the research document will give you a greater depth of understanding.

The introductory video is from the North East Autism Society. It alerts parents and educators to signs a child might be masking austism and the related issues that this may cause.
