A Guide to being a Reader or Scribe

At Opogo, we provide hundreds of readers and scribes to schools across the UK. By taking our Inviligator Course, you can get a good understanding of the wider invigilation requirements and be able to work in our schools as an invigilator. However, being a reader or scribe has different requirements. In this course, you will see the ‘Do’s’ & ‘Don’ts’ below. After reading, you can access the attached materials and also go to the associated lesson.

Do’s:

  1. Follow the instructions provided by the exam board and the JCQ guidelines carefully.
  2. Ensure that you have appropriate training and experience to fulfill the role of a reader or scribe.
  3. Treat the candidate with respect and maintain confidentiality throughout the exam process.
  4. Read or write only what is stated by the candidate without offering any form of assistance or interpretation.
  5. Provide support in a neutral and non-distracting manner to help the candidate access the exam materials.
  6. Clarify any uncertainties with the exam invigilator or responsible personnel before proceeding.
  7. Stay focused and attentive throughout the duration of the exam to accurately fulfill your role.

Don’ts:

  1. Do not offer any form of guidance, hints, or suggestions to the candidate during the exam.
  2. Avoid engaging in conversation with the candidate beyond what is necessary for exam administration.
  3. Refrain from providing any personal opinions or interpretations of the exam questions or tasks.
  4. Do not assist the candidate in any way that could give them an unfair advantage over others.
  5. Avoid making any changes or alterations to the candidate’s responses unless explicitly instructed by the exam board or invigilator.
  6. Do not share any confidential information about the exam or the candidate with unauthorised individuals.
  7. Refrain from using any unauthorised aids or materials during the exam process.

It’s important for readers and scribes to adhere strictly to these guidelines to ensure the integrity and fairness of the exam process for all candidates.

Now, take the lesson associated with this course and then take the quiz to gain your certificate. You can also check out the materials section to get an understanding of how these access arrangements are decided by the centre.
