What’s new with KCSIE for 2024?

The “Keeping Children Safe in Education” (KCSIE) guidance has been updated for September 2024. The changes are not major but you’ll need to be aware of them. They will come into force from September when the new version is published. You can access the full KCSIE course on the Learn platform here. The Changes

One of the key updates is the increased emphasis on online safety, recognising the growing risks associated with digital platforms. Schools are now required to have robust policies in place to address issues such as cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate content, and online grooming. The guidance also stresses the importance of educating students about online safety, equipping them with the knowledge to navigate the digital world safely.

Another major update concerns the role of the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL). The 2024 version of KCSIE outlines expanded responsibilities for DSLs, including a greater focus on early identification of safeguarding concerns and ensuring that staff are fully trained to recognise the signs of abuse and neglect. This includes a stronger emphasis on mental health, with the guidance encouraging schools to integrate mental health awareness into their safeguarding procedures.

Additionally, the 2024 update introduces new requirements for handling allegations against staff. Schools must now follow more rigorous procedures when allegations arise, ensuring that all concerns are taken seriously and investigated promptly, regardless of the perceived severity. The guidance also provides clearer instructions on how to manage low-level concerns, aiming to create a culture where safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.

Finally, the updates reinforce the importance of multi-agency working, encouraging schools to collaborate closely with local authorities and other agencies to provide comprehensive support for children at risk.
